Eric talked me into fencing saber during my junior year and epee during my senior year, as a way to help balance the teams after the graduation of Dong Park in saber, (76 ) and Arlie Sterling in epee (77). Initially, I was a little apprehensive. He explained convincingly that this was also a prime opportunity to obtain good exposure to the other weapons. He was right. I’m grateful for the experience and am now advising the fencing club at Purdue, giving lessons periodically in all three weapons.
Eric was clearly the most dominant influence in my fencing, extending well beyond my days at MIT. He taught me epee and saber from scratch, and took my foil game to a new level. Most important, though, Eric taught me strategy, which was the game changer for me.
